In November 2004 Commander David Fravor commanded Strike Fighter Squadron 41, the Black Aces, aboard the USS Nimitz, at the start of the work-up for a deployment to the Persian Gulf. On 14 November, off San Diego, his flight of two F/A-18Fs launched for a two-versus-two air-to-air exercise controlled by the cruiser USS Princeton. On check-in, the controller told them training was suspended for real-world tasking.
