Probed Analysis

A retired British police officer, under the pseudonym Philip Spencer, reported a striking encounter on the morning of December 1, 1987, on Ilkley Moor in West Yorkshire, England. While walking to visit a relative, Spencer claimed to have seen something unusual: a small, humanoid creature standing in the mist, about four feet tall, with long thin arms and a disproportionately large head. He reportedly snapped a photograph of the being before it fled into the fog. Spencer also said he witnessed a saucer-shaped craft with a domed top rise off the moor and vanish, and later discovered that his compass behaved abnormally and that an hour had seemingly passed without his awareness.

These elements—an alleged alien presence, missing time, photographic material, and physical irregularities—are what make this incident one of the most discussed and perplexing within British UFO lore.

Spencer has stated he took the photo with no intention of profit; soon after the event, he contacted UFO researchers Jenny Randles and Peter Hough and gave over the photograph’s copyright. A wildlife photographer who reviewed the image said it did not match any known animal species, while a laboratory test by Kodak at Hemel Hempstead found no signs of photographic tampering, declaring that the subject in the image was not simply superimposed. However, another expert, Bruce Maccabee, described the photo as “too grainy for proper testing,” suggesting limitations in what can be concluded from it.

Some details of Spencer’s story evolved after a session of regressive hypnotherapy in March 1988, conducted by Jim Singleton. Under hypnosis he expanded his account to include being rendered immobile, lifted into the craft, subjected to medical examination, and shown films depicting environmental disasters and human suffering. These new memories contradicted or extended parts of his original testimony about gestures from the creature and the sequence of events. The second film, according to Spencer, remains undisclosed, as purportedly directed by the entities involved.

Skeptics question the case’s credibility. The photograph is frequently described as extremely blurry, making identification difficult, and some have suggested the figure might be a cardboard cut-out or a man in costume rather than an alien. Others point out the lack of a photograph of the craft itself—especially given its described prominence—calls into question parts of Spencer’s narrative. Also, anomalies like a malfunctioning compass or lost time are common in abduction stories, and some argue they are psychologically driven rather than physically grounded.

Despite uncertainties, the Ilkley Moor Incident endures in UFO history because it combines several elements that appear in other famous cases: a credible witness with a law-enforcement background, claimed photographic evidence, physical anomalies, and post-experience memory regression. Whether viewed as proof of extraterrestrial visitation or a vivid psychological event, it remains one of the UK’s most compelling and controversial encounters, still discussed by researchers on both sides of belief.
