The O'Hare Airport UFO was reported on November 7, 2006 at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States. The core account is that multiple United Airlines employees, including mechanics and other aviation personnel, saw a dark or gray disc-shaped object hovering above the Gate C17 area. Some accounts said the object shot upward and punched a hole through the cloud layer.
The case became public after Chicago Tribune transportation reporter Jon Hilkevitch investigated tips and published the story in January 2007. That reporting turned a workplace sighting into a national airport-safety question. The event matters because it happened in a highly controlled airspace environment. Airports have schedules, radar coverage, weather reporting, tower procedures, security infrastructure, and trained observers.
A reported object above a gate raises immediate questions about traffic conflict, ground operations, and whether the event entered formal safety channels. It also created an unusual credibility profile: the witnesses were not casual skywatchers but airline employees working inside an airport system.
The public record, however, is thinner than the setting implies. The Federal Aviation Administration said it had no radar return and reportedly described the event as a weather phenomenon. FAA and airline handling became part of the controversy because witnesses and journalists questioned why the incident was not investigated more deeply. United initially treated the event cautiously in public, while press coverage noted that employee reports were real enough to circulate internally.
That split between witness seriousness and official dismissal is why the O'Hare case persisted.

The public did not receive a complete set of those records. The hole-in-cloud detail is striking but also analytically tricky.
Hole-punch clouds and other weather phenomena can create unusual openings in a cloud deck, while a rapidly departing object could also be interpreted through a changing cloud gap. Without synchronized photos, weather radar, and exact timing, the cloud report supports that witnesses noticed something unusual but does not identify the object. O'Hare also shows how official explanations can be both plausible and unsatisfying. A weather phenomenon is possible, especially if the main visible result was a cloud disturbance.
But a short explanation does not account for every witness description unless it is tied to documented conditions and timing. Conversely, gaps in the FAA response do not prove extraordinary technology. They show that a public-facing closure statement can be too thin for a case that witnesses experienced as concrete.
