Probed Analysis

The Phoenix Lights refers to one of the most widely witnessed and discussed unidentified anomalous phenomena events in recent U.S. history. On the night of March 13, 1997, thousands of people across Arizona—and parts of Nevada—reported seeing large formations of lights traveling and hovering in the sky. The incident gained intense public attention and ignited ongoing debate because of its scale, the range of witness types, and the uncertainty surrounding what was observed. While official agencies have proposed military explanations, many witnesses—including pilots and the governor at the time—express that what they saw doesn’t align neatly with those explanations.

Witnesses reported two distinct but possibly related phenomena. The first was a V- or boomerang-shaped formation of five to ten steady lights moving slowly across the sky between roughly 7:55 and 8:40 p.m. MST, seen over areas from northern Arizona down through Prescott, Phoenix, and toward Tucson. Some observers described the shape as solid, dark, and silent, with lights embedded along its lower edge, giving it a “wedge” or “carpenter’s square” appearance.

A few hours later—around 9:15 to 9:35 p.m.—a second group of lights appeared near the Sierra Estrella mountain range just outside Phoenix. These lights seemed stationary to many observers, lined up in a row or slight arc, glowing orange or red-orange, and hovering for several minutes before fading. Official interpretations focus mostly on the second event. The U.S.

Air Force and other authorities have said these lights were illumination flares dropped from A-10 aircraft conducting training over the Barry Goldwater Range. These flares, mounted on parachutes, burned slowly and could appear to hover, then extinguish behind terrain. The first phenomenon—this large V-shaped configuration—remains more ambiguous in official statements. Some skeptics argue it was also related to military aircraft flying in formation, possibly linked to Operation Snowbird or other Air National Guard flights, while others say the size, silence, and sharp shape reported by many individuals do not match what observers have termed “conventional” aircraft or known aerial hardware.

Among the most notable voices involved was Arizona Governor Fife Symington III. Initially he publicly downplayed the event, but years later he stated he was personally a witness and described what he saw as “enormous and inexplicable,” asserting that it did not resemble flares or any aircraft he had ever encountered. Frances Barwood, then a Phoenix city councilwoman, said her office received hundreds of observer reports; she has also claimed that no comprehensive government interview of witnesses took place during the immediate aftermath. Why does the Phoenix Lights still attract interest decades later?

One reason is that it bridges two realms: the routine and the mysterious. Part of the incident is grounded in accepted military activity; another part persists in witness descriptions that differ in character—shape, motion, silence—that resist those explanations. The event also left a cultural mark: it features in documentaries, local lore, and ongoing UFO/UAP discussions as a case that is well documented yet not entirely explained. What remains unsettled are questions about the first event: Was there a large craft, or simply coordinated lights or aircraft?

How accurately do human perceptions map to geometry, distance, and sound in nighttime conditions across vast terrain? To what extent did military flares contribute to misinterpretations? And, crucially, whether broader disclosure of military logs, flight plans, or air-traffic control data might clarify—or complicate—what is accepted as fact. The Phoenix Lights endure not just as a spectacular event witnessed by many, but as a reminder of how uncertainty can persist even in heavily observed phenomena.

We're told there are government files on obscure cases involving a handful of witnesses, yet somehow there appear to be little to no publicly released files on some of the biggest mass sightings in history. Thousands of people witnessed the Phoenix Lights. Hundreds of students, teachers and civilians witnessed events like Westall and Ariel School. If the goal is transparency, why are we getting documents on relatively minor incidents while major, widely witnessed cases seem absent from the co...

Phoenix, Arizona 13 of march 1997. Ive seen countless movies and documentaries on this, is there any plausible explanation for this case that isnt extraterrestrial?

So many attended and many were younger people. Everyone was so nice and I think the best part for me was meeting other experiencers and talking In the Experiencer session I shared three of my stories, The Phoenix Lights I was so close to and could see the bottom of the craft clearly, growing up in Jim Jones' church when I was a child and paranormal experience with Rev Jim and my last was caring for and soul contact with my Hospice children, I'm a pediatric hospice nurse working exclusively wi...

New website called ufoevidence.com just dropped. Landing page says: "Unidentified anomalous phenomena are present in our skies and oceans. Examine the best evidence for yourself, assess the record with rigor, and get involved in advancing public understanding of the phenomenon." They have cases like the US Navy videos, Rendlesham, Phoenix Lights, etc

They're using the same strategy the Arizona governor used. It's propaganda 101. If you don't want people to take something seriously, then you mock it for being a ridiculous idea. So, now what? This shows they aren't taking any of this seriously.

Growing up I remember seeing the Phoenix Lights UAP on live TV. With all the recent files being released, or even with documentation from the last few years, is there anything in there regarding more information on that case? I'd love to learn more. I've seen the documentary online about it and interview with the governor at the time, Fife Symington III. But I wonder if there's even more information out there that you thought would shed more light on that.

Phoenix Lights Witness Shares His Encounter.

Dr. Lynne Kitei may be the expert on the Phoenix Lights. I’ve seen a lot of posts and a lot of of YouTube videos on the subject, but this is the first time I’ve heard her firsthand witness experience. Great interview from 2014

I’ve been looking into the Phoenix Lights case of 1997. Most of it is what I’ve seen in a lot of videos on the topic…but I came across a detail I hadn’t heard before: that there were a few reports of a “mothership ufo that was 2 miles wide”. One group of real estate agents reported seeing it, but I couldn’t really find others. I couldn’t tell if this was because there’s really no validity to it because I couldn’t find anyone really addressing it. For reference, the V shaped craft was estimate...
