Many people are pointing out that the US did as much, if not more. I agree that the US did as much. Our First Amendment is the gold standard for free speech, and the Supreme Court's rulings in the 20th Century are historic. I don't think it did more because most of the major intellectual arguments for free speech were made by the English before 1776, and both Madison and Jefferson were British subjects.
