Cape Canaveral is the low Atlantic headland on Florida's Space Coast that gave its name to one of the world's most important launch regions. The geography should be distinguished from two neighboring installations: Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, whose pads support military, civil, and commercial launches, and Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island. Together they form a connected aerospace landscape, but they are not the same place.

The United States established a long-range proving ground at the cape in 1949, and the first launch followed in July 1950. Early missile tests led into the Mercury and Gemini programs, while later launch complexes supported robotic planetary missions, military payloads, and commercial rockets. The region's restricted zones, tracking networks, and ocean-facing trajectories made it a natural gateway for high-risk aerospace development.

Cape Canaveral enters UAP discussion through that dense history of observation. Astronaut debriefings sometimes preserve reports of lights or objects crews could not immediately identify, including material collected in the 1962–1963 astronaut scientific debriefings. Launches also produce luminous exhaust, stage separations, fuel vents, reentries, and expanding twilight clouds that can look extraordinary far beyond Florida. Those known effects explain many reports without erasing the value of documenting observations that remained uncertain to their witnesses.

The cape's importance is therefore technological and geographic. It is a place where experimental vehicles have repeatedly entered public view before becoming familiar, and where human spaceflight generated firsthand observational records. Treating the cape, the Space Force station, and Kennedy as separate but linked locations keeps launch history clear and prevents every unusual light over the Space Coast from being assigned to the wrong facility.
