The North American Aerospace Defense Command is a binational organization created by Canada and the United States in 1958. Its three missions are aerospace warning, aerospace control, and maritime warning for North America. NORAD detects, validates, and warns of aircraft, missile, and space threats while supporting the defense of Canadian and American sovereign airspace.

The command fuses information from radars, satellites, fighters, civil aviation authorities, and partner organizations. Its commander answers to both the American president and Canadian prime minister. NORAD shares a headquarters and commander with U.S. Northern Command, but NORTHCOM is an American combatant command with separate legal authority; the two names are not interchangeable. NORAD’s regional structure includes the Canadian NORAD Region, Continental U.S. NORAD Region, and Alaskan NORAD Region. Aircraft control and warning depend on national forces assigned for the mission rather than a separate binational military service. This arrangement explains why records from one response may be held by several Canadian and American commands.

Unknown tracks, balloons, drones, and other incursions can enter NORAD’s operational picture before their nature is resolved. The 2023 high-altitude-object episode showed that sensor thresholds and collection priorities shape what becomes visible. A track labeled unidentified during response is not necessarily permanently unexplained, and public descriptions may omit sensitive sensor performance or intelligence.

NORAD is central to UAP and national security because it provides warning and response, not because it is a scientific UAP laboratory. Case analysis should separate initial detection, validation, identification, engagement, and later assessment. It should also distinguish NORAD data from records held by the FAA, military services, or intelligence agencies. The command’s importance is a continental sensor-and-decision network whose operational labels must be read in context.
