Dan Burisch is an American who says he worked as a microbiologist on a secret government project at S-4, the site near Area 51 that Bob Lazar had described in 1989, studying an extraterrestrial he calls J-Rod. He was born Danny Benjamin Crain and took the surname Burisch through a legal name change granted in 1995, according to the journalist Linda Moulton Howe. No official record or independent witness has confirmed his account, and his scientific credentials have been disputed since it first appeared.

The story reached the public through the researcher Bill Hamilton, who began recording interviews with Burisch in 2002, and through Howe's Earthfiles reports from September 2003. In those accounts Burisch said he had studied J-Rod's biology for the government, and Howe reported that he was still working for it under what she called a house-arrest arrangement. He has also been reported as claiming that he cloned alien viruses at the site. He repeated the story on Coast to Coast AM in 2004. After that broadcast, the show's website posted an image credited to Ron Garner as a purported photograph of J-Rod. The French researcher Patrick Gross identified it as a special-effects figure that had appeared on the FXmasters website by 2000.

Burisch has said he earned a doctorate in microbiology and molecular genetics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1989. A 1991 résumé under the name Danny B. Crain, among documents later posted on Earthfiles, lists him as a Nevada parole and probation officer from 1988 onward and gives his doctorate as an honorary degree from a "John Quincy Adams Institute of Research, Technology, and Life Sciences," according to the critical website UFO Watchdog. Skeptics have pointed out that he was apparently working as a parole officer in Las Vegas while supposedly completing the New York degree. Burisch has said the résumé entries were made at the request of the agency he worked for.

The story kept circulating in 2026. The anthropologist Michael Masters cited it on The Joe Rogan Experience, saying J-Rod had told Burisch that the visitors were humans from about 55,000 to 60,000 years in the future, an account that fits Masters's own hypothesis that UFO occupants could be our descendants. Clips of that remark spread through the year. In March, a short film titled XV, which its creators said was inspired by one of the internet's most persistent conspiracy legends, dramatized the story. The Vetted channel shared it under the headline "Dan Burisch UFO Film Shown Publicly For First Time."

More than two decades after it surfaced, the J-Rod account remains one of the most elaborate insider stories attached to Area 51 and one of the most disputed. It survives through interviews recorded in the 2000s, an online archive kept by supporters and the time-travel speculation it feeds, while no document or second witness has placed Burisch at S-4.
