Tucker Carlson is an American conservative political commentator, author, and media figure born May 16, 1969, in San Francisco. He is the son of Dick Carlson, a journalist and diplomat, and Lisa McNear, an artist. He grew up primarily in La Jolla, California, after his parents divorced when he was young. Carlson attended St.
George’s School in Rhode Island and graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, with a degree in history. His early career was in print media, writing for conservative outlets such as The Weekly Standard and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, before moving into television commentary.
His rise on cable news spanned CNN, PBS, MSNBC, and eventually Fox News. On Fox, his nightly show Tucker Carlson Tonight (2016-2023) became one of the most viewed programs in cable political news. Carlson co-founded The Daily Caller in 2010, using it as a platform for conservative commentary. He has authored several books, including Ship of Fools: How a Selfish Ruling Class Is Bringing America to the Brink of Revolution (2018), The Long Slide: Thirty Years in American Journalism (2021), and earlier, Politicians, Partisans, and Parasites (2003).
Carlson’s public persona is marked by populist rhetoric, frequent critiques of elites, strong takes on immigration, race, and national identity, and criticism of both establishment Democrats and Republicans. Some of his commentary has sparked controversy and accusations of promoting conspiracy-theoretic ideas and misinformation; these claims are reported in media evaluations and analyses.
His personal life includes over thirty years of marriage to Susan Andrews, whom he met in high school. They have four children, one of whom, Buckley Carlson, has entered public service; Buckley works as deputy press secretary for Vice President J.D. Vance. Carlson has stated that religion—he identifies as Episcopalian—plays a role in his life, though he has also described tension with organized religion over social issues.
