Tulsi Gabbard is an American military officer and political figure who served in the Hawaii legislature, represented Hawaii in the U.S. House, ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, left the party, and later joined Donald Trump’s administration. A veteran with overseas deployments, she became director of national intelligence in February 2025 and left the post in June 2026.
Gabbard entered public office in Hawaii, served in the Army National Guard with deployments to the Middle East, and represented the state in Congress before running for president in 2020. She later left the Democratic Party, aligned with Donald Trump, and entered his administration as director of national intelligence. Her tenure placed a former antiwar candidate over the intelligence community during a politically turbulent period. Leaving the role in 2026 added another sharp turn to a career repeatedly defined by breaks with former allies.
Gabbard’s intelligence role placed her over the coordinated U.S. intelligence community during a period of intense political pressure for declassification, including UAP records. Before and during her tenure, disclosure advocates looked to her public emphasis on transparency and institutional reform. The existence of that expectation does not show that she verified crash-retrieval claims, and official releases during her tenure must be assessed on their own terms.
Gabbard’s relevance to UAP disclosure came from holding executive intelligence authority during a period of heightened pressure for records review. The office gave her the ability to coordinate agency searches, declassification work, and congressional access involving government secrecy. Her relatively brief tenure also illustrated how quickly institutional responsibility can shift even when public expectations remain fixed on a named official.
