Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a 1977 science-fiction film written and directed by Steven Spielberg. Richard Dreyfuss plays Roy Neary, an Indiana electrical worker whose sighting of an unidentified craft becomes an obsessive search for meaning. His path converges with Jillian Guiler, whose son has disappeared, and with an international scientific team preparing for contact at Devils Tower in Wyoming.
The title comes from astronomer J. Allen Hynek, whose close-encounter scale classified reports by proximity and effect; Hynek also appears briefly in the finale. Spielberg uses that technical vocabulary as the frame for a story about awe, communication, and institutional secrecy. The five-note musical exchange, air-traffic scenes, witness sketches, and mass arrival at Devils Tower made contact feel procedural and collective rather than simply monstrous or invasive.
Released in the decade after Project Blue Book ended, the film drew on a recognizable mixture of UFO reports, government rumors, and postwar science fiction. Its visitors are elusive and physically uncanny, but the climax imagines deliberate communication rather than conquest. The production’s visual effects and sound design were widely celebrated, and the Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry in 2007 for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
Close Encounters profoundly shaped Hollywood and UAP. Later witness accounts and popular imagery often echo its luminous craft, tones, bodily effects, and secret landing site, which makes the film part of the cultural environment surrounding reports—not evidence for them. Its lasting achievement is emotional and cinematic: it translated the UFO era’s uncertainty into a story where curiosity survives fear and contact becomes a problem of language.

Can we as a group do our best to stop using the hand scanner as evidence of proof for Bob Lazars story? This was clearly shown in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Bob would have been 11 when this movie came out. He himself has stated he’s a science fiction fan.
