Apollo 11 was the NASA mission that made the first crewed landing on the Moon, flown from July 16 to July 24, 1969, by commander Neil Armstrong, command module pilot Michael Collins and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin. Its place in the record of unidentified anomalous phenomena rests on one passage in the crew's post-flight debriefing, in which they described an object they could not immediately identify on the way to the Moon, and on decades of embellished stories built around the flight.
The crew launched from Kennedy Space Center on a Saturn V on the morning of July 16 aboard the command module Columbia and the lunar module Eagle. Armstrong and Aldrin landed at Tranquility Base in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20 with about 30 seconds of landing fuel remaining, and Armstrong stepped onto the surface that night. The two spent about two and a half hours outside, collecting roughly 22 kilograms of samples, before rejoining Collins in lunar orbit. The crew splashed down in the Pacific on July 24 and was recovered by the USS Hornet.
In the technical crew debriefing of July 31, 1969, Aldrin said the first unusual thing they saw came about a day out, or close to the Moon. The crew asked Mission Control about the spent S-IVB rocket stage and were told it was about 6,000 miles away. Through a monocular the object appeared to have an L shape at the limit of resolution, and through an out-of-focus sextant it resembled a tumbling hollow cylinder. Collins said he suspected it had come from their own spacecraft, and the crew recorded no firm conclusion. The same debriefing describes the flashes of light Aldrin saw inside the darkened cabin, which Armstrong attributed to atomic particles; NASA's later light-flash studies linked such flashes to cosmic rays passing through the eye.
Aldrin has addressed the sighting many times. After a 2005 documentary presented it as unexplained, he said his own explanation had been cut, and in 2014 he wrote that the object was most likely sunlight reflecting off one of the panels that separated from the rocket stage, adding that it was technically unidentified but "not an alien." Other stories are unfounded: the claim that Armstrong reported alien craft on a crater rim traces to a fabricated transcript printed in 1969, and a viral 2024 "deathbed confession" attributed to him was a hoax.
In May 2026 the Department of War's first PURSUE release included an 11-page excerpt of the Apollo 11 debriefing bearing its original confidential markings, although the full debriefing had been publicly available online since 2005. The release made no finding about the object, and social-media claims that the Pentagon had confirmed a UFO went beyond the record. Some commentators also described "Apollo 11 photographs" in the release, but its lunar images came from Apollo 12 and Apollo 17. Apollo 11's role in the UAP record is therefore a well-documented crew observation that the astronauts themselves attributed to their own hardware.
