The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is the United States’ civilian space and aeronautics agency. Congress created NASA in 1958 from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and related federal programs, giving it responsibility for peaceful space activity and advanced flight research. From Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo through the space shuttle, the International Space Station, robotic planetary missions, and modern Earth-observing satellites, the agency has built much of the public scientific record of the space age.
NASA works through mission directorates and research centers that design spacecraft, operate observatories, fund scientists, publish data, and coordinate with commercial and international partners. Its remit ranges from human exploration to astrophysics, heliophysics, planetary science, climate observation, and aeronautical engineering. Instruments and missions are built to answer defined research questions, so the agency’s strongest contribution to any disputed subject is usually its expertise in sensors, calibration, open data, and the disciplined treatment of uncertainty.
In 2022 NASA commissioned an independent study of UAP, not to re-investigate individual sightings but to recommend how the agency’s data and scientific practices might support future work. The team’s 2023 report called for better data collection, standardized reporting, stigma reduction, and use of Earth-observation and commercial data where appropriate. NASA appointed a director of UAP research and emphasized that the available evidence did not support an extraterrestrial conclusion. That position separates the reality of unidentified reports from claims about what causes them.
NASA’s relevance to UAP is narrower than the military mission of AARO: it has no general law-enforcement or air-defense authority and does not own most classified national-security sensor data. Its value lies in making UAP data collection more scientific and in placing the search for unusual observations within a long institutional tradition of measurement, peer review, and public release. NASA can improve the quality of questions and datasets without promising that every anomaly will become extraordinary.
