Another important thing to remember regarding the deficit of transients in the Earth's umbra at 42,000 km: Palomar Observatory observed always at nighttime, under the blanket of the atmosphere. Primary cosmic rays striking the upper atmosphere create secondary cascades that scatter far too much to preserve any high-altitude geometric shadow on the photographic plates. That deficit, therefore, cannot be explained by a cosmic-ray model.
