During a week of heightened North American surveillance following the Chinese high-altitude balloon, NORAD tracked another object toward the Great Lakes. On President Joe Biden's order, a U.S. Air Force F-16 fired on it over Lake Huron. The Pentagon said the first missile missed and a second brought the object down; officials described it as a potential hazard to civil aviation rather than an assessed military threat. The episode is recorded as the 2023 F-16C Lake Huron UAP Shootdown.
Officials said the object had traversed near sensitive military sites and was roughly octagonal, with strings attached and no readily apparent payload. Recovery work took place in difficult winter conditions, and the United States later ended the search without publicly recovering material sufficient to identify it. That unresolved outcome left the event open to speculation, but it did not produce evidence that the object was extraterrestrial or technologically extraordinary.
