Tehran is the capital and largest city of Iran, built on the southern slopes of the Alborz mountains, whose Tochal peak rises to 3,963 metres above the city's northern districts. The Qajar ruler Agha Mohammad Khan made it his capital in 1786. The city counted about 8.7 million people in the 2016 census and is Iran's political, financial and cultural center, with landmarks that include the Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Azadi Tower of 1971 and the 435-metre Milad Tower.
Tehran was the center of the 1979 revolution that replaced the monarchy with the Islamic Republic, and the seizure of the U.S. Embassy that November began the 444-day Iran hostage crisis; former Army remote viewer Joe McMoneagle recounted the crisis in a 2026 interview about the Stargate program. In recent years the city has been a wartime target, struck by Israeli air raids in June 2025 and again during the 2026 war.
The city's place in UFO history rests on the 1976 Tehran UFO incident. Shortly after midnight on 19 September 1976, residents of the northern Shemiran district telephoned reports of strange objects, and Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantoms were scrambled from Shahrokhi air base. The first crew reported losing instruments and radio as it closed on a bright light north of the city; the second, flown by Maj. Parviz Jafari, reported a radar lock, a smaller object separating from the first and a failed weapons panel. A U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff message relayed the account through defense channels. Skeptics Philip Klass and James Oberg proposed that the crews were chasing Jupiter, and Klass attributed the failures to ordinary equipment faults; Jafari described the encounter publicly in Washington in 2007.
Fifty years later, on the evening of 20 September 2026, smartphone video filmed near the Azadegan Expressway showed a curved formation of multicolored lights that appeared to hover over the city. The clip spread worldwide amid U.S.-Iranian threats of renewed strikes. Reuters Connect, which distributed the footage, said its size, altitude, distance and speed were unconfirmed, Iranian authorities did not identify the object, and commentators suggested an LED-lit drone or kite. Tehran remains one of the few capitals where a military intercept of an unidentified object was documented in official records, a precedent that framed how the 2026 footage was received.

One of my favorite cases, The 1976 Tehran UFO that could read minds
I've wanted to make an episode on this case for a while. For me, it's one of the most astounding encounters in the whole UFO genre, not because of what was seen or the fact that two fighter pilots engaged with an unknown object. The implications are how the object neutralized the jets, especially the aggressive attacking from the pilots. I don't know what really happened, but it seems like the UFO was somehow able to anticipate what the pilots were going to do, at the exact moment they attemp...

🚨THE PENTAGON RELEASED FOOTAGE OF A SILENT UFO OVER COLORADO While the footage from Tehran was spreading across social media, the Pentagon released four recordings of another unidentified object seen over Colorado in October 2023. The videos were recorded on a mobile phone by a local law enforcement officer. He described seeing red, blue and green flashing lights coming from an object that made no sound at all. I found the transcript even more interesting. The officer described it as an "orb...

Images from the Iranian capital Tehran allegedly show a mysterious flying object hovering over the city, following US President Donald Trump's threats to blow up the entire country. Videos circulating on the Internet show an unidentified aircraft shaped like a soccer ball flying high above the city, with multi-colored lights flashing on the underside of the craft. "No official source has confirmed the speed, height, distance or size of this object," reports IndianExpress.com. The video appear...
Unusual lights spotted over Tehran on September 20 have become the subject of heated online discussion after a video of the phenomenon began circulating on social media. The footage shows bright points of light in the dark sky, but lacks detail to determine what exactly was captured. This also attracted attention due to an interesting historical coincidence. Tehran had already been linked to one of the most talked-about UFO incidents involving military pilots in 1976.
[Retweeted] August 2010: a hovering craft, estimated two football pitches long, filmed over Mauritius. Curved delta shape, hundreds of small coloured lights along its edge. New footage from Tehran shows a strikingly similar craft. 15 years and thousands of miles apart. Similar design. #uap https://t.co/SUXfDcaVXh
