A UAP sighting is an observation of an object or apparent phenomenon that remains unidentified at the time it is reported. The term does not describe a single kind of thing and does not imply an extraterrestrial origin. Reports may begin with a pilot's visual account, radar track, infrared image, civilian video, or a combination of sources. They range from brief points of light to structured objects and unusual motion, but the quality of the underlying information varies widely.
Modern official reporting emphasizes that identification is a data problem. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office records time, location, altitude, shape, sensor type, and flight behavior when those fields are available. Its published trends show that many closed cases resolve as balloons, satellites, aircraft, birds, drones, or sensor artifacts. A smaller group remains open chiefly because the observation lacks enough information for a confident determination, not because an extraordinary cause has been established.
Some sightings matter because trained observers and multiple instruments recorded them in sensitive airspace. Military encounters represented in Sensor Evidence & Military Video helped move the subject from informal UFO reporting into aviation safety, intelligence, and congressional oversight. Even then, apparent speed or acceleration can be distorted by viewing geometry, platform motion, range uncertainty, glare, and incomplete metadata.
