Donald D. Hoffman is an American cognitive scientist and professor emeritus at the University of California, Irvine. Trained in mathematical psychology, he has worked on visual perception, artificial intelligence, computational models of recognition, and the relationship between consciousness and physical theory. His academic career established him within mainstream vision science long before his broader philosophical arguments gained a popular audience.

Hoffman is best known for the interface theory of perception. Using evolutionary game theory, he argues that natural selection favors perceptions that guide adaptive behavior rather than perceptions that accurately depict objective reality. He compares ordinary experience to a computer desktop: useful icons may organize action without resembling the circuits and code beneath them. His book The Case Against Reality developed this argument for general readers, while his technical papers attempt to state it mathematically.

He has extended that work into a more ambitious proposal in which conscious agents, not spacetime and matter, are fundamental. This remains a speculative research program rather than a consensus account of mind or physics, and philosophers and scientists have challenged both its evolutionary assumptions and its conclusions. Within consciousness and psi discussions, however, Hoffman offers a rigorous vocabulary for considering why human perception might omit large parts of whatever reality is.

When Hoffman enters the UAP conversation, his role is conceptual rather than evidentiary. He has entertained the possibility that unfamiliar intelligences or structures could be present without appearing in the limited interface human beings evolved to use. That idea does not demonstrate that aliens are nearby or explain any particular sighting. It instead reframes non-human intelligence as a problem about observers and access to reality, making his work influential among people seeking models that go beyond physical craft alone.
