Edgar Dean Mitchell was an American naval aviator, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School with a doctorate from MIT, he served as lunar-module pilot on Apollo 14 in 1971. Mitchell and commander Alan Shepard spent more than nine hours walking on the Moon, while his work helping recover the mission from an early docking problem reinforced his standing as a technically accomplished astronaut.

During the return to Earth, Mitchell described a powerful sense of unity and interconnectedness that changed the direction of his life. After retiring from NASA and the Navy in 1972, he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences to support research into consciousness, intuition, and human potential. His post-Apollo work joined the authority of spaceflight with questions that most aerospace institutions treated as philosophical or marginal, making him a major public figure in consciousness and psi.

Mitchell also became an outspoken advocate for government openness about UFOs. He said people with military and intelligence backgrounds had told him that extraterrestrial visitation and a Roswell cover-up were real. He consistently clarified that he had not personally seen a UFO in space and was not speaking from direct NASA access to a recovered craft. His statements therefore constitute informed secondhand belief rather than firsthand proof of crash retrieval and reverse engineering.

Mitchell’s enduring significance comes from refusing to keep his astronaut identity separate from his interest in UAP and consciousness. His stature helped reduce some of the stigma around those subjects, but it also caused later retellings to overstate what he knew personally. He provided a credible account of who spoke to him and what he came to believe; the underlying claims remain dependent on sources whose evidence was not made public.
