James Earl Carter Jr. was an American naval officer, farmer, governor, and Democratic politician who served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981. Carter’s life moved from the Naval Academy and nuclear-submarine work to peanut farming, Georgia politics, the presidency, and decades of humanitarian service.
