John Alva Keel, born Alva John Kiehle in 1930, was an American journalist, traveler, and author who became one of the most influential interpreters of UFO and paranormal reports. He began writing professionally while young, contributed to magazines, radio, comic books, and television, and traveled through the Middle East and Asia. His first book, Jadoo, grew from those journeys and his interest in magic, folklore, and unusual belief.
Keel turned intensively to UFO reports in the 1960s, corresponding with witnesses and traveling to active case areas. His investigation of strange lights, winged-creature reports, and other events around Point Pleasant, West Virginia, became The Mothman Prophecies. The book connected those reports to threatening phone calls, apparent men in black, predictions, and the 1967 Silver Bridge collapse, creating a lasting cultural narrative without demonstrating that the events shared a single cause.
In UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse and later work, Keel rejected a simple extraterrestrial-spacecraft explanation. He proposed that a broader “superspectrum” could produce physical, psychic, and folkloric effects, adapting its appearance to human expectations. That framework anticipated later interest in links among UAP, apparitions, poltergeist reports, and consciousness and psi. It was an interpretive model, not a tested physical theory.
Keel’s lasting contribution was methodological and literary: he paid attention to absurd details, witness psychology, recurring motifs, and the social afterlife of a sighting. His files also reveal the uncertainty, dead ends, and occasional embellishment behind the published stories. By treating non-human intelligence as potentially deceptive and culturally responsive, he widened the field beyond nuts-and-bolts craft while leaving a legacy that demands the same caution he often brought to other people’s explanations.
