Leslie Kean is an American investigative journalist whose work has focused on subjects that sit outside ordinary news coverage, including unidentified aerial phenomena, survival of consciousness, and unexplained aviation incidents. She co-founded the Coalition for Freedom of Information and spent years gathering official records and testimony from pilots, military officers, and government figures.
Kean’s journalism developed around subjects that institutions often treat cautiously, including human-rights reporting, aviation testimony, survival research, and government secrecy. Her 2010 book on UFOs relied heavily on named pilots and officials, establishing the sober, document-conscious style that later shaped her newspaper work. She subsequently wrote about evidence for consciousness after death, making her broader career one of sustained inquiry into extraordinary reports through witnesses whose conventional credentials make easy dismissal more difficult.
Her 2010 book UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record presented cases through named witnesses and documents rather than anonymous folklore. Kean later joined Helene Cooper and Ralph Blumenthal on the 2017 New York Times reporting that revealed a Pentagon UAP effort and publicized military videos. In 2023 she and Blumenthal introduced David Grusch’s allegations in The Debrief. The claims in those stories depend on the evidence and sources cited; publication did not settle their ultimate explanation.
Kean is a foundational journalist in media coverage of UAP and whistleblower testimony.
