Mark Edward Kelly is an American senator, retired U.S. Navy captain, and former NASA astronaut. A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Naval Postgraduate School, he flew 39 combat missions during Operation Desert Storm and logged more than 5,000 hours in over 50 aircraft. NASA selected Kelly as an astronaut in 1996 in the same class as his twin brother, Scott.
Kelly flew four Space Shuttle missions, piloting STS-108 and STS-121 and commanding STS-124 and the final flight of Endeavour, STS-134. He spent more than 50 days in space before retiring from NASA and the Navy in 2011. After the 2011 shooting that severely injured his wife, former representative Gabby Giffords, the couple became prominent advocates for gun-violence prevention.
Elected to the Senate from Arizona in 2020, Kelly serves on committees including Armed Services and Intelligence. Those assignments place him within the institutional chain responsible for military aerospace programs, classified briefings, and UAP oversight. His experience as a combat aviator and astronaut also makes him a natural reference point in public debates about pilot observations and space-domain awareness.
Kelly’s direct public record on UAP is comparatively limited, and he is not publicly identified with the leading disclosure advocates. What places him in the story is jurisdiction: he is a technically experienced lawmaker with access to committees that can demand reports, authorize programs, and protect classified testimony. That makes his choices important to UAP and national security, even though he has not publicly claimed knowledge of non-human craft or endorsed the central crash-retrieval allegations.
