Matthew Louis “Matt” Gaetz II is an American lawyer and former Republican politician known for his hard-edged conservative style, loud media presence, and controversial legal history. Born May 7, 1982 in Hollywood, Florida, he followed his father Don Gaetz into politics, serving in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016 before winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Florida’s 1st Congressional District. Gaetz held that seat from January 2017 until his resignation in November 2024 after Donald Trump, having won the presidency again, selected him as Attorney General—an appointment Gaetz ultimately withdrew from amid public and political backlash.
In Congress, Gaetz gained attention as a vocal member of the Republican Party. He has aligned closely with Trump, participated in dramatic partisan fights—including his role in removing Kevin McCarthy as Speaker in 2023—and embraced provocateur rhetoric in media appearances. His legislative priorities often emphasized rollback of immigration constraints, non-interventionist foreign policy, opposition to abortion, strong support for gun rights, and aggressive criticism of political rivals.
Allegations of sexual misconduct have shaped much of Gaetz’s public profile. Federal investigations into whether he had sex with underage individuals or engaged in sex trafficking were opened and later closed without charges due in part to concerns about witness credibility. A House Ethics Committee report released in late 2024 accused him of paying for sex—including with a 17-year-old—and improperly using illicit drugs while in office. The investigation cited evidence consistent with violations of state sexual misconduct laws but found insufficient proof for criminal sex trafficking under federal law.
As of early 2025, Gaetz has transitioned out of Congress and into media work, hosting a talk show weeknights on One America News Network. He continues to assert strong views about transparency in government, including on issues like disclosure of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), where he has claimed to have seen classified information he believes should be released to the public. Gaetz remains a polarizing figure who draws both fervent support and sharp criticism.
