Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, writer, and science communicator who has served as the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City for many years. He holds a BA in Physics from Harvard University, an MA in Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin, and a PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia University, where he completed his doctoral work in 1991. Tyson is also a research associate in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History.
He came to prominence not just for his academic credentials but for his ability to explain complex astronomical ideas to the public via books, media programs, podcasts, and frequent interviews. His works include Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, Space Chronicles, and The Pluto Files, among others.
In the realm of unidentified aerial/acoustic phenomena—often called UFOs or UAPs—Tyson plays a distinct role: neither dismissive nor credulous, but cautious and evidence-driven. He has expressed skepticism about many claims of alien visitation, noting that many UFO reports lack the kind of reliable, high-resolution data one would expect if such phenomena were occurring. For instance, he has pointed out that with billions of smartphones and advanced cameras in the world, it is telling that much of the so-called evidence remains blurry, monochromatic, or ambiguous. This stance does not close off possibility; rather, he emphasizes the gap between sensational anecdotes and what scientific proof demands.
Tyson has also addressed the scientific and cultural dimensions of life beyond Earth. He often speaks of astrobiology: the recognition that the basic chemical building blocks of life are common across the galaxy, and that life—especially microbial—might well exist elsewhere. However, he distinguishes between “life” and “intelligent alien visitors,” saying that currently there is no conclusive proof of extraterrestrials having visited Earth. He raises philosophical questions, such as the famous Fermi Paradox (“Where are they?”), but usually frames these as provocations for thought rather than unsettled mysteries to be claimed as factual.
Among his specific criticisms of UFO/UAP discourse: eyewitness testimony is, in his view, unreliable compared to physical evidence. He challenges the idea that lack of transparency—or a governmental cover-up—is sufficient proof of extraordinary claims. Tyson has quipped that “we would know” if aliens visited Earth, given the ubiquity of recording devices today, suggesting that credible, high-quality evidence ought to exist if such events were real.
While he remains skeptical, Tyson supports legitimizing inquiry into UAPs when done with rigor. He encourages improved data quality, scientific openness, and institutional readiness to investigate unidentified anomalies. He warns against leaping to conclusions based on insufficient or fuzzy evidence, urging both the public and scientists to hold uncertainty without abandoning curiosity.

Renowned scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson tells US government to 'Show the alien!' after latest UFO disclosure
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, 67, explained how any alien visitor from another planet would likely look very different from humans and may not even share the same DNA structure.

Steven Spielberg: "The public have a right to know about Aliens" 👽🛸 "With all the evidence over 80 years, I am on much firmer ground to believe, Aliens are here" He told Neil deGrasse Tyson that the unknown is known by a very small group of people, the injustice of not everyone knowing what they know drives some of our greatest stories. Spielberg highlights this inequity in his new film, arguing that secrecy around what we don't know creates a fundamental unfairness for the public. With mou...
