Probed Analysis

Robert L. Salas is a former United States Air Force officer and aerospace engineer who has become one of the most recognized figures in the discourse around nuclear-related UFO or UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) incidents. Educated at the U.S. Air Force Academy and holding a master’s in aerospace engineering (and reportedly further training in education), Salas served from the mid-1960s through 1971 in roles that included missile propulsion engineering and missile launch control.

After his Air Force service, he worked in aerospace industry roles, later at the Federal Aviation Administration, and went on to author several books. His journey reflects a transition from military officer to public advocate, speaking and writing about what he asserts are UFO incidents involving nuclear weapons.

While in the Air Force, Salas was assigned at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, working as a launch officer for Minuteman I ICBMs. In March 1967 he reports that during his watch at a launch control facility, security personnel observed strange glowing lights or an object near a missile silo gate. According to Salas, shortly after those observations, ten nuclear missiles went offline—entered “no-go” status—despite redundant safeguards. This is the event commonly known as the “Malmstrom UFO incident,” which Salas contends involved direct interference with nuclear systems.

The Air Force, according to public accounts, later determined the missiles’ failure was due to technical causes (for example, a control system fault or electromagnetic effects).

Salas has spoken repeatedly in public about the military’s response—or lack thereof—to the events he describes. He says that following the incidents he and other personnel were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements or loosely implied dissuasions, and that official explanations do not address the UFO incidents directly. He wrote the book Faded Giant (co-authored with James Klotz), among others, which presents his version of the Malmstrom case with declassified documents, letters, and interviews. Later books such as Unidentified: The UFO Phenomenon and UAPs and the Nuclear Puzzle further explore alleged ties between UAPs, nuclear arsenals, and national security, urging more transparency.

Salas’s accounts have been both influential and contested. Some former military and security personnel have supported or corroborated aspects of his narrative. Skeptics challenge the causal link between the UFO reports and the missile shutdowns, saying technical malfunctions, misperception, or memory errors are more likely explanations. In recent years, a Pentagon assessment reportedly attributed the missile system disruptions in the 1967 event to a classified test of an electromagnetic pulse simulator—providing a non-UFO explanation.

What matters about Robert Salas is the role he plays in bringing attention to the possibility that aerial phenomena—known or unknown—might interact with nuclear weapons systems. His career blends technical credibility (military engineering, launch command) with advocacy, combining public speaking, written testimony, and book-length works. For those following government disclosure, Salas is among the individuals whose testimony is often cited when drawing correlations between UAP reports and strategic risk.
