The Book of Enoch, usually called 1 Enoch, is an ancient Jewish apocalyptic collection attributed to the biblical patriarch Enoch but composed by multiple authors over time. Its sections include the Book of the Watchers, Parables, Astronomical Book, Dream Visions, and Epistle of Enoch. Most Jewish and Christian traditions did not include it in their biblical canons, while the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church preserved the complete work in Geʽez.
The best-known section expands the brief Genesis story of the “sons of God.” Angelic Watchers descend, take human wives, teach forbidden arts, and father violent giants; divine judgment follows. Other portions present tours of the cosmos, calendars, visions of history, and a coming judgment. These are theological and literary works rooted in Second Temple Judaism, not eyewitness reports written by the historical Enoch.
Aramaic fragments found among the Dead Sea Scrolls transformed modern study of the text by demonstrating its antiquity and circulation at Qumran. Scholars compare those fragments with Greek witnesses and the later Geʽez tradition to reconstruct how the collection developed. Its imagery also influenced early Christian language about fallen angels, punishment, and the “Son of Man,” even as the work’s canonical status varied sharply among communities.
Modern ancient-astronaut interpretations recast the Watchers as extraterrestrial visitors, their teachings as transferred technology, and heavenly journeys as spacecraft encounters. That reading is a recent overlay rather than the historical consensus on the text’s genre. The Book of Enoch remains relevant to UAP and religion because it supplies durable language for beings descending from the sky and crossing human-divine boundaries. Its real evidentiary value is for the history of apocalyptic thought, while claims that it records alien contact depend on assumptions the manuscripts themselves do not establish.
