The Anunnaki were a group of deities in ancient Mesopotamian religion. Cuneiform sources use related terms such as Anunna and Anunnaku in ways that vary across periods and cities, often for major gods who decree fates. They belong to the religious and literary world of Sumer, Akkad, Assyria, and Babylonia; the ancient texts do not describe them as visitors from a hidden planet operating a technological mining colony.
The extraterrestrial version is modern. Erich von Däniken popularized a general “ancient astronaut” framework in the late 1960s, arguing that gods and monuments preserved memories of alien contact. Zecharia Sitchin’s 1976 book The Twelfth Planet recast the Anunnaki as beings from Nibiru who engineered humans to mine gold. Those claims became a major source for later television, internet mythology, and some readings of ancient mysteries.
Assyriologists and archaeologists do not accept Sitchin’s translations or chronology. Specialist reference projects identify the Anunnaki as divine figures within a changing pantheon, not a biological species. Archaeological evidence explains Mesopotamian cities, writing, agriculture, and monuments through human societies and their material history. Similar ancient-astronaut arguments about pyramids and megaliths often detach objects from excavation context and underestimate documented human engineering.
The topic remains relevant because it shows how authentic ancient names can be repurposed into a modern origin story. Mesopotamian religion, the Book of Enoch, biblical giants, and UFO narratives are frequently blended despite coming from different languages, periods, and traditions. Separating the source texts from twentieth-century reinterpretation preserves both the real ancient culture and a clear account of how the extraterrestrial claim developed.
I'll just say that modern religion has been absolutely tainted by humans and people with their own agenda, but every culture from all parts of the planet are more or less telling a similar story. I'm starting to think the ancient aliens theory is real. I am starting to think that religion is trying to explain something that has been otherwise beyond our comprehension and we are just now developing the tools to detect some weird shit. Anyone else?
