Near-death experiences are vivid episodes reported by some people who survive cardiac arrest, severe trauma, anesthesia complications, or other life-threatening states. Common features include a sense of leaving the body, unusual clarity, passage through darkness, light, encounters with deceased people, life review, and reduced fear of death. The pattern is real as reported experience even though its cause and interpretation remain disputed. Cultural setting can influence the imagery while broad features recur across populations.

Prospective studies interview cardiac-arrest survivors after resuscitation rather than collecting only self-selected accounts. The Dutch study published in 2001 and the later AWARE projects found that a minority reported experiences with recurring themes. AWARE II also monitored physiology and attempted hidden-target tests; it documented recalled experiences but did not produce robust visual-target evidence of perception from outside the body.

Neuroscientific explanations include residual or returning brain activity, disordered multisensory integration, REM intrusion, medication, hypoxia, and memory formation around loss and recovery of consciousness. Survival interpretations argue that the lucidity and timing of some reports are difficult to reconcile with severely impaired brain function. The available studies are constrained because resuscitation is uncontrolled, precise timing is hard to establish, and most patients do not survive or remember the event.

The Afterlife claim goes beyond the clinical observation of an NDE. Organizations such as the International Association for Near-Death Studies collect testimony and support experiencers, while consciousness researchers debate mechanisms. NDEs have durable psychological effects and deserve clinical attention; they do not yet provide a consensus demonstration that personal consciousness continues after irreversible death.
