Bigelow Aerospace was a privately held space-technology company founded in 1999 by hotel entrepreneur Robert Bigelow in North Las Vegas. It developed expandable habitat technology derived from NASA’s TransHab concept, aiming to create lower-mass orbital modules for research, stations, and eventual commercial use. The company launched the Genesis I and II pathfinders in 2006 and 2007 and later supplied the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module for the International Space Station.
The company’s aerospace work was real and technically distinct from Bigelow’s interest in UFOs, consciousness, and paranormal claims. BEAM launched aboard a SpaceX mission in 2016 and remained attached to the station after demonstrating the practicality of expandable construction. Bigelow Aerospace later reduced operations and laid off its workforce in 2020, leaving patents, hardware, and a development history that influenced commercial-station concepts even though its larger orbital plans were not realized.
Bigelow also created Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, or BAASS, a separate entity that received the Defense Intelligence Agency’s AAWSAP contract. BAASS collected anomalous reports, commissioned technical studies, and conducted work associated with Skinwalker Ranch. The shared founder, facilities, and name often cause the habitat company and the government contractor to be treated as one program, but their corporate purposes and records should be distinguished.
Bigelow Aerospace occupies an unusual place in UAP history because a legitimate space company, its founder’s private research, and a defense-funded anomalous program overlapped institutionally. That proximity has fueled allegations that the company handled exotic material or concealed a retrieval effort; public evidence has not established those claims. Its documented legacy remains twofold: pioneering expandable space habitats and providing the organizational environment from which BAASS and AAWSAP emerged. That distinction prevents separate records from being collapsed.
