UFO records are the documentary trail left by sightings, investigations, policy decisions, and public requests. They include case files, cables, photographs, radar summaries, interviews, briefing slides, regulations, and correspondence. The label covers records created under changing terms—from flying discs and UFOs to unidentified aerial or anomalous phenomena—and does not mean that every document endorses the claims it preserves. A report may record a witness statement without verifying it.
The largest established U.S. collection is the declassified archive of Project Blue Book, the Air Force investigation that closed in 1969. The National Archives holds administrative files and individual sighting cases, as well as related records from Air Force commands, the FAA, NASA, and other agencies. Intelligence agencies also maintain reading rooms with documents released through review or litigation. Catalog descriptions, creation dates, originating offices, and original attachments are essential because isolated pages often circulate without their administrative context.
Congress created a new UAP Records Collection in the National Archives through the fiscal 2024 NDAA. Agencies were instructed to identify and transfer digital copies of government-funded UAP records, including releasable, partially restricted, and postponed material. NARA began publishing transfers in 2025 and describes the collection as ongoing. The law makes preservation and centralized discovery more systematic, but it does not require immediate unredacted release of every national-security record.
The value of FOIA & Transparency is cumulative: even mundane paperwork can establish that an office existed, a briefing occurred, or a case was routed in a particular way. Records can also expose contradictions and missing attachments. They still require source criticism. A genuine government document proves what the agency recorded or communicated, not necessarily that the event it describes occurred exactly as claimed.
