The Philadelphia Experiment is the name given to an alleged wartime test in which the US Navy is said to have made a warship disappear. In the usual telling, the destroyer escort USS Eldridge (DE-173), at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on or around October 28, 1943, was surrounded by a field that made it invisible; later versions add that it vanished, appeared at Norfolk, Virginia, more than 200 miles away, and returned, leaving crew members harmed. No record from 1943 supports the story, which comes from letters one man began writing more than a decade later.

The account begins with Morris K. Jessup, a UFO author who had published The Case for the UFO in 1955. Beginning in January 1956, Jessup received letters signed Carlos Miguel Allende, which warned him away from research into levitation, invoked unpublished theories of Albert Einstein and claimed the writer had watched the Eldridge experiment from a merchant ship. When Jessup asked for proof, the writer pointed to a newspaper article that has never been found. Separately, an anonymously mailed copy of Jessup's book, its margins filled with handwritten notes, reached the Office of Naval Research. In 1957 Jessup was shown the book at ONR, where Captain Sidney Sherby and Commander George W. Hoover had taken an interest, and he thought the handwriting resembled Allende's. Varo Manufacturing of Garland, Texas, whose president Austin Stanton was also drawn to the case, then reproduced the annotated book and the letters in a small mimeographed run that became known as the Varo edition. Jessup passed away in 1959.

The Navy's records contradict the story. An Office of Naval Research information sheet dated September 8, 1996, states that ONR never investigated invisibility, in 1943 or at any other time, and that its scientists regard such an experiment as possible only in science fiction; ONR itself was not established until 1946. The Naval History and Heritage Command reports that its archives reviewed the Eldridge's deck log and war diary from the ship's commissioning on August 27, 1943, through the end of that year, and that the ship, which was training near Bermuda from mid-September, "was never in Philadelphia" during that period. At an April 1999 reunion, Eldridge veterans told a Philadelphia newspaper that their ship had never made port there. Navy personnel have suggested the legend grew from wartime degaussing, a technique that reduced a ship's magnetic signature against mines but did nothing to its visibility.

The letter writer was identified by researcher Robert Goerman as Carl Meredith Allen of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, a former merchant seaman, and Allen later said he had written the annotations himself to frighten Jessup. In a 1994 paper in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, Jacques Vallée suggested that garbled memories of degaussing work on the USS Engstrom, docked near the Eldridge in 1943, and of naval ships moving between Philadelphia and Norfolk through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal may have fed the legend. The story spread through Vincent Gaddis's 1965 book Invisible Horizons and The Philadelphia Experiment: Project Invisibility (1979) by Charles Berlitz and William L. Moore, which presented it as fact and which critics said borrowed from the 1978 novel Thin Air. A time-travel film of the same name, directed by Stewart Raffill, followed in 1984, and from 1989 Alfred Bielek claimed to have been aboard the ship.

The legend remains a touchstone in disclosure media, where it is invoked in claims about field propulsion and time travel. In March 2026 a clip attributed to a son of Army officer Philip Corso circulated on X in which he said he believed Roswell was "a time travel cover up" and referred to the Philadelphia Experiment. In April, Jesse Michels's channel American Alchemy made previously deleted footage of Bob Lazar available to members, listing among its topics the Philadelphia Experiment and Thomas Townsend Brown. More than eight decades after the date it names, the story still rests on Allen's letters, while the Eldridge's own logs never place the ship in Philadelphia.

Michels argues that Back to the Future may symbolically invoke Thomas Townsend Brown, the Philadelphia Experiment, capacitor-based anti-gravity lore, and the possibility that the UFO image can mask time travel or timeline intervention.

Doc Brown may be modeled, at least symbolically

Al Bielek was an alleged American time traveler who claimed that he had previously lived as Edward Cameron, a physicist and U.S. Navy officer involved in the alleged Philadelphia Experiment aboard the USS Eldridge in 1943. Bielek said that during the experiment, he and Duncan Cameron jumped from the ship and instead of landing in the water, traveled forty years into the future to Montauk, Long Island, in 1983. Bielek later published two photographs of a man he identified as Donn Thor, the all...
