Jacques Vallée is a French-born computer scientist, astronomer, author, and venture investor. Early in his career he worked in astronomy and on networked computing, including projects that contributed to the development of ARPANET. In parallel, he built one of the most influential bodies of UFO research, beginning with systematic case catalogues and historical comparisons.
Vallée trained in astronomy and computer science, worked on early Mars observations, and later contributed to networked computing before becoming a venture investor in Silicon Valley. Those careers made information systems central to his thinking: he viewed UFO reports not simply as isolated objects but as patterns shaped by witnesses, culture, and possible feedback. His books evolved from cataloging cases to proposing a broader control-system model, making his intellectual biography one of continual departure from the field’s dominant explanation.
Vallée initially explored an extraterrestrial interpretation but became dissatisfied with a model based only on spacecraft visiting from another planet. Books such as Passport to Magonia compared modern encounters with folklore, apparitions, and older contact traditions. He later argued that the phenomenon may interact with human perception, culture, and belief in ways that suggest a broader “control system.” He has also investigated alleged physical traces and co-authored work on reported recovered materials.
Vallée’s career joined databases, field investigation, computer science, folklore, and theory in a way that permanently broadened UAP research. His interdimensional hypotheses and interest in consciousness challenged a simple spacecraft model without denying that a real anomaly may exist. That combination made him foundational to studying the phenomenon as a system of physical reports, human experiences, and cultural effects.
