PURSUE UFO Files Release 05 was the fifth tranche of government UFO files published under PURSUE, the federal effort to locate, review and release records on unidentified anomalous phenomena. The Department of War posted it to its war.gov UFO portal on August 7, 2026, adding to a collection that began on May 8. Each file carried an official title and description rather than a finding, and chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department and its agency partners were "actively working on the next release of UAP files."

The release held 41 files: 22 documents, 16 videos and three images. By agency, 19 came from the Department of War, 17 from the FBI, two each from the CIA and State Department, and one from the Executive Office of the President. Its centerpiece was an intelligence report and six cellphone recordings, submitted by U.S. Central Command, of an AC-130J gunship's infrared display during a September 8, 2021 live-fire exercise over the Gulf of Oman. The aircrew reported about 25 sightings of "cold orbs," the first two roughly four feet across, with speed estimates of 250 to 1,300 mph; the official description cautions that this language reflects the crew's subjective interpretation. Four more Central Command clips came from the Middle East and five from the Pacific in 2019. Eight FBI interview forms, several paired with FBI-made renderings, described triangular craft from Bagram in 2002 to Colorado Springs in 2023 and lights seen in the western United States in 2026. Older files included CIA memos on a 1964 Navy radar track near Puerto Rico above 3,800 knots, which a CIA science official thought possibly linked to foreign intelligence gathering, and cables in which U.S. diplomats called a 1963 Brazilian crash story unsubstantiated.

Coverage centered on the Gulf of Oman footage, which Scientific American and EarthSky reported in detail, and on the FBI triangle accounts. NewsNation quoted Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb calling a former pilot's account of a triangle about 500 feet across over Bagram "remarkable," while saying the release was short on data scientists could use; former defense analyst Marik von Rennenkampff said it showed activity "incredibly difficult to explain away." UFO historian Richard Dolan said the tranche was not disclosure but "not nothing either." No agency offered an explanation for the modern cases, and every military video was filed as an unresolved UAP report.

Release 05 followed Release 04 on July 10, whose 40 files featured early Air Force studies and nuclear-site reports, and preceded Release 06 on September 18. It moved the series toward recent testimony, with most of its documents coming from FBI witness interviews and renderings. Its lasting record is the Gulf of Oman report with its six cellphone videos, the 1964 radar memos and a set of firsthand FBI accounts from 2002 to 2026, none of which the release itself resolved.

Dolan argues that Release 05 is the strongest tranche so far—not because it identifies the objects or constitutes disclosure, but because it documents recurring military encounters, object forms, investigations, and institutional concern across eight decades.

Even so, he argues that dismissing the tranche as a “nothing burger” overlooks a significant record of military encounters, recurring object forms, official investigations, and institutional concern extending from the 1940s to the present.

Dolan is my favorite UFO analyst. Really well educated about history and politics. On top of it for 30 years. Hope you're doing good. I'm sober since 1/2024. Still struggling here and there. Just picked up a nicotine vape habit. Feeling like a dork but not hacking up anything awful.

Scientific American is now covering one of the most interesting cases in PURSUE Release 05: the Gulf of Oman “cold orbs” incident. According to the associated government report, U.S. Special Operations personnel aboard an AC-130J observed multiple anomalous objects on infrared sensors during a 2021 exercise. The report describes them as “cold orbs,” moving in formation at speeds ranging from roughly 250 to 1,300 mph, with no detected means of propulsion. But the key issue remains the same. Th...

The Department of War added Release 05 to its PURSUE/UFO archive on August 7. It contains 41 files: 22 documents, 16 videos and three images. Disclosure up front: I run Probed. The goal of our UFO Files section is to make it the most complete way to explore the PURSUE UFO files. Release 05 is fully indexed and searchable in the Probed UFO Files Tracker, with page-level citations and links back to every original file on War.gov. If anything is missing or would make it more useful, please tell...

A lot of people are asking about the 1964 Navy case from my Tranche 5 video, the one where a delta-shaped object was tracked above 3,800 knots. That's still one of the wildest data points in the whole file. ▶️Full details in the video. https://t.co/H7A4lXoiKC

Still going through the reactions to my UAP Tranche 5 breakdown. The AC-130 "cold orbs" case over the Gulf of Oman is one of the stranger entries in this release. If you haven't watched it yet, it's up on my channel now. https://t.co/tmd7u3Q5lk

More connections being made here by my friend and colleague, the legendary Geoff Cruikshank, aka u/harry_is_white_hot before he dropped his mic on here two years ago. He's connecting the dots between the seemingly random bits released in these new Tranche dumps better than anyone I've seen so far with his attention to detail, proving how real and connected this actually all is. https://geoffcruickshank.substack.com/p/the-special-1947-ufo-blue-book-from?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=1r...

6/ That becomes really interesting alongside Release 05. The newest 'tranche' contains recent FBI witness interviews and military material alongside historical records, including accounts of large triangular objects and the Gulf of Oman AC-130J incident involving objects described by the crew as "cold orbs." Reporting on the release says the military footage shows the objects during a live fire exercise, with the crew reporting unusual behavior around the aircraft's weapons activity. Those ca...
