The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the principal domestic intelligence and investigative agency of the United States. It operates under the U.S. Department of Justice, mandated to uphold federal law, protect civil rights, counter national security threats, and support the criminal justice system. Its jurisdiction spans a wide spectrum: counterterrorism, counterintelligence, cybercrime, public corruption, organized crime, violent crime, and major financial crime.
