The Giza Plateau is a low limestone shelf at the edge of Egypt's Western Desert, about 9 kilometres west of the Nile and 13 kilometres southwest of central Cairo. It holds the royal necropolis of the Fourth Dynasty, built between about 2600 and 2500 BC: the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx on its eastern side, queens' pyramids, causeways, temples and fields of officials' tombs. It forms the northern end of the Memphis and its Necropolis World Heritage Site, inscribed by UNESCO in 1979.
The Great Pyramid and the Sphinx have their own histories; the plateau's story is the planning and labor behind them. From 1984 Mark Lehner's Giza Plateau Mapping Project surveyed its terrain to predict where the builders lived, and excavation from 1988 uncovered a planned town south of the Sphinx, beside the stone wall called Heit el-Ghurab, with bakeries, gallery barracks, a livestock corral, officials' houses and a royal administrative building. Archaeologists read the town, quarries and tombs as the home of the workers and administrators who built this, the best known of the Egyptian pyramids fields.
The plateau's layout has long fed alternative theories. In 1989 Robert Bauval proposed that the three pyramids mirror the stars of Orion's Belt, an idea later expanded with Graham Hancock; astronomer Ed Krupp noted that the match works only if one pattern is turned upside down. Newer claims look underground. In March 2025 radar engineer Filippo Biondi and chemist Corrado Malanga said satellite radar showed eight cylindrical shafts and a network reaching about two kilometres beneath Khafre's pyramid, unpublished findings that archaeologists Lawrence Conyers and Sarah Parcak dismissed; in August 2026 the journal Remote Sensing retracted the pair's earlier radar paper on the Great Pyramid. In March 2026 Biondi said scans pointed to a second sphinx buried on the plateau, a claim amplified by the Daily Mail and UAP podcasts.
The plateau also anchors a prophecy. Chris Bledsoe's Regulus prophecy turns on the Sphinx's eastward gaze, and on 7 October 2026 Bledsoe posted a pre-dawn photograph over Giza showing Regulus beside the Moon, calling it "the red star I was shown." The archaeological consensus is unchanged: the monuments are Fourth Dynasty royal tombs and temples built by Egyptian crews, and no excavation has confirmed the shafts, chambers or second sphinx proposed beneath them. That gap between an excavated royal necropolis and the hidden structures attributed to it keeps Giza central to ancient-mysteries and UAP media.
