The Great Sphinx of Giza is a colossal reclining lion with a human head, carved directly from the limestone bedrock of the Giza Plateau, beside the causeway that leads to the pyramid of Khafre. It measures about 73 metres long and 20 metres high and faces east. Most Egyptologists attribute it to Khafre, who reigned around 2558–2532 BC, though Khufu and Djedefre have also been proposed and no inscription settles the question. It stands within the same UNESCO-listed necropolis as the Great Pyramid.
Its history is one of burial and recovery. Around 1400 BC Thutmose IV cleared drifting sand from its paws and set the granite Dream Stele between them, and its missing nose was removed deliberately with rods or chisels rather than, as legend has it, by Napoleon's cannon. Its age has been argued over since geologist Robert Schoch proposed in the early 1990s that weathering in the enclosure reflects heavy rainfall and a much earlier date, a view mainstream Egyptologists and most geologists reject. Edgar Cayce's 1930s prediction that a "Hall of Records" would be found beneath the monument in 1998 was not fulfilled.
In 2026 the Sphinx became the center of a prophecy. North Carolina experiencer Chris Bledsoe says a being he calls the Lady told him that new knowledge would come to humanity when the "red star of Regulus" appears in the gaze of the Sphinx, a message he described in his 2023 memoir UFO of God. Followers expected it at Easter 2026; on Easter Sunday a fan account reported Bledsoe saying astronomers had recalculated the alignment to October. On 7 October he posted a photograph of Regulus beside the Moon over Giza, taken by a board member of his institute, and wrote that he had been shown "the alignment, not a date," while skeptical commentators said nothing visible had happened. Bledsoe has also pointed to the emblem of Space Delta 18, the Space Force intelligence unit now called the National Space Intelligence Center, which pairs a sphinx with a star.
Radar claims added a second strand. In March 2026 engineer Filippo Biondi said he was about 80 percent confident that a second sphinx lies under a mound on the plateau, citing satellite radar work and a reading of the Dream Stele; former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass rejected the idea, and no excavation has followed. These narratives have made the Sphinx a fixture of 2026 UAP and prophecy media, layered onto a monument that archaeology places in Khafre's reign some 4,500 years ago.
