Norway is home to the Hessdalen valley, where recurring lights have been studied with instruments since 1983, and to a 1954 report of a sphere seen by three schoolgirls at Torpo.
Norway, the Scandinavian kingdom on the North Atlantic, is best known in UAP history for a valley where unexplained lights keep appearing. The Hessdalen lights are seen along a 12-kilometre stretch of the Hessdalen valley in rural central Norway. They have been reported since at least the 1930s and peaked between December 1981 and mid-1984, when they were observed 15 to 20 times a week; by 2010 sightings had fallen to between 10 and 20 a year.
That frequency turned the valley into a field site. Project Hessdalen was started in 1983 by the groups UFO-Norge and UFO-Sverige and ran field investigations until 1985, and an automatic measurement station was installed in the valley in 1998. Later work brought in scientists and students from Østfold University College and Italy's National Research Council, and researchers have proposed several natural explanations: combustion of airborne dust, dusty plasma formed by radon decay, piezoelectric charge from strained quartz-bearing rock, and a 2014 proposal that the valley behaves like a giant battery. None has produced a consensus. Some sightings have also been attributed to aircraft, car headlights, astronomical bodies and mirages.
Other Norwegian reports are more scattered. On 30 November 1954 the newspaper Hallingdølen reported that three schoolgirls at Torpo, in Hallingdal, had been surprised by a sphere about 3.5 metres across that passed over their heads, and that one thought she saw a figure behind a window; local Home Guard personnel reportedly found a 25-metre strip where the snow had been blown away. The account is preserved in a 1981 retelling in the Nordic UFO Newsletter. In July 1986 a family near Torpo filmed two bright lights that some experts suggested were Jupiter and Arcturus. On 9 December 2009 a blue spiral of light seen across northern Norway was explained the next day, when Russia's defence ministry announced a failed Bulava missile test.
Hessdalen returned to the news in September 2026, when journalist Ben Schreckinger reported in Paradigm that scientists who study the valley saw parallels with two orb cases in the U.S. Department of War's PURSUE files, including an October 2023 report of a "mother orb" releasing smaller orbs. Erling Strand, chairman of Project Hessdalen, told him his team had seen lights split in two and said, "We saw it on the radar screen." Norway's UAP record is therefore unusual: its central case is a recurring phenomenon tied to one valley, which researchers have spent four decades measuring.

Larsen, CSI (Civilian Saucer Investigation) On the afternoon of November 23, 1954, three young schoolgirls — Anne Storedal, Tora Storedal, and Tora Moy Hauge — walking home from school in Torpo, Norway, found themselves followed by a round, roughly 10-ft flying saucer, its underside black with yellow spots and small red jags, its upper section transparent. The craft descended to within 3-4 ft of the girls, close enough for them to see...

[Retweeted] EXCLUSIVE: Scientists say these Norwegian “lights” could hold clues to Trump UFO files mystery Scientists who have studied a rare aerial phenomenon in Norway tell PARADIGM it could shed light on two notable cases from the War Department's UFO disclosures. Both cases involve recent eyewitness reports by U.S. officials of luminous orbs behaving in ways that have defied explanation. Experts on the Hessdalen lights, a luminous phenomenon observed for decades over a Norwegian valley, s...

Earlier this summer I noticed some similarities between the October 2023 and late 2025 UFO cases from the PURSUE releases and research on the Hessdalen lights, which have been observed for decades over the Hessdalen valley in Norway. The most striking similarity was between the observation from the October 2023 case of a "mother orb" that ejected smaller orbs and a description in a 2004 Hessdalen paper of a large ball of light ejecting smaller balls of light. The Hessdalen lights are not full...

Thank you for the reply. Good stuff. "When we finally see how counterproductive our tribalism is, we will work together to demand that our government serves its people as well as a capitalist country like Norway does." (I loved my time in Communist Norway (🇳🇴😄) and hope we adopt some of their ideas one day. I remember asking my ex-girlfriend (she lives in Oslo) what she thought about paying higher taxes and she said something like, "We know it's for the greater good and so we're okay with...

ICYMI, this is Billy the Psychic Cat's complicated methodology for how he picks World Cup winners. In games that haven't ended in a tie, his accuracy rate has been 93% (27/29). Today, he's chosen Mexico 🇲🇽 and Brazil 🇧🇷. I'm rooting for Mexico 🇲🇽 and Norway. 🇳🇴. https://t.co/6YvwBLVjyS [Quoted] Well, looks like Billy the cat was right about Morocco 🇲🇦 lol https://t.co/aHA5lzshJ2
The truth: I was supposed to go back for three months and we were discussing the possibility of me moving there. I was gonna go to Hessdalen (UAP/mystery lights hotspot), but a week before my flight, she emailed me a Dear Joe letter. I was devastated. I sent out a post to my UFO/paranormal email list (they knew I was thinking of moving there) and titled it: "Norway Goes Boom." Will Miller (Wilson/Davis fame and UFO briefer of Pentagon folks) was one of my readers, saw my headline, and thought...
About a month ago in the middle of yhe day my girlfriend and I were in the vicinity of Hessdalen and decided to make the trip. She's open but not really a super believer. But, she is fairly spiritual. We went to the lookout point at the beginning of the valley. I asked her to send out positive energy and ask to see something. I saw something like for like a split second. It a small part of the clouds in a circular form inverted in color almost like a old analog photo negative then reurned to...
