Zeta Reticuli is a wide binary of two Sun-like stars, Zeta1 and Zeta2 Reticuli, about 39 light-years from Earth in the small southern constellation Reticulum. Under very dark southern skies the pair is a naked-eye double, but it lies too far south to be seen from Europe or most of the United States. The stars are at least 3,750 astronomical units apart and take 170,000 years or more to orbit each other. Each is slightly less massive than the Sun and poorer in heavy elements, and their estimated ages run to a few billion years.
No planets are known around either star. The Spitzer Space Telescope detected excess infrared light around Zeta2 Reticuli, attributed to a warm debris disk, and a later Herschel image appeared to show a ring like the Kuiper belt, but ALMA observations in 2017 and 2018 found that the structure did not move with the star and was background confusion.
The system entered UFO history through the Betty and Barney Hill abduction. Betty Hill drew a star map she said she had seen aboard the craft, and John G. Fuller's 1966 book The Interrupted Journey reproduced it. From 1968 Marjorie Fish, an elementary school teacher and amateur astronomer in Oak Harbor, Ohio, built a bead-and-thread model of nearby Sun-like stars and concluded that the pattern matched a view with the Zeta Reticuli pair as home base; Astronomy magazine opened a debate with Terence Dickinson's December 1974 article "The Zeta Reticuli Incident." Former Air Force agent Richard Doty, appearing under a pseudonym on a 1988 television special, described a treaty with grey aliens from the system, and Bob Lazar has said that briefing papers he read at S-4 traced the craft he worked on to a planet there. On Joe Rogan's podcast in April 2026, Lazar said that the briefing's information might not be true.
Astronomers disputed the match. Carl Sagan and Steven Soter called the map "little more than a random alignment of chance points," and Sagan showed in Cosmos in 1980 that without its drawn lines it bore no resemblance to the real stars, though statistician David Saunders put the odds against chance at 1,000 to 1. Distances measured by the Hipparcos satellite in the 1990s placed some of Fish's stars much farther away than assumed, and Fish later publicly rejected her hypothesis. Zeta Reticuli's place in UFO lore rests on a hand-drawn map and claimed briefing papers, while astronomers study it as one of the nearest Sun-like binaries.
