Cornell University is a private Ivy League research university in Ithaca, New York, founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. It is also New York's land-grant university, with about 26,800 students and additional campuses in New York City and Doha, Qatar. Its ties to the UAP debate run mainly through astronomy and the search for life beyond Earth.
The central figure is Carl Sagan, who joined Cornell in 1968 and directed its Laboratory for Planetary Studies until his death in 1996. Sagan helped organize the 1969 American Association for the Advancement of Science symposium on UFOs and co-edited its proceedings, UFO's: A Scientific Debate, published by Cornell University Press in 1972. He rejected the extraterrestrial explanation for UFOs while defending the scientific study of reports, and he helped design the Pioneer plaques and the Voyager Golden Record. Cornell also operated the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico until 2011, from which Frank Drake and colleagues sent the 1974 Arecibo message toward a distant star cluster.
That legacy continues at the Carl Sagan Institute, where astronomer Lisa Kaltenegger's team published a catalog in March 2026 narrowing more than 6,000 known exoplanets to 45 rocky worlds in their stars' habitable zones. Cornell also hosted arXiv, the physics and astronomy preprint server founded at Los Alamos, from 2001 until it became an independent nonprofit in 2026. In October 2025 arXiv declined to post two peer-reviewed papers by the VASCO project linking 1950s sky-survey transients to nuclear tests and UFO reports, saying one lacked sufficient scholarly substance; astronomer Beatriz Villarroel and her supporters called the decision a product of stigma.
In the fall of 2026 the university faced national scrutiny over its handling of a 2024 sexual-assault allegation involving members of a fraternity. After the local district attorney declined to prosecute, New York's governor appointed the state attorney general to lead a criminal investigation, and faculty moved toward a no-confidence vote in university leadership; no one had been charged, and the accused denied the allegations. NewsNation covered the story heavily.
Cornell's significance in the UAP record is as an academic home of the scientific search for life elsewhere. Through Sagan it shaped the mainstream scientific skepticism toward UFOs, and through arXiv it sits at the gatekeeping point where new, contested UAP-adjacent research seeks a scientific audience.
