Majestic-12, or MJ-12, is the name given to an alleged top-secret committee supposedly created by President Harry Truman to manage recovered UFO craft and biological material. The group entered public culture through documents received by researcher Jaime Shandera in 1984 and later promoted by William Moore and Stanton Friedman. No authenticated executive order, membership record, or archival chain has established the committee’s existence.
The principal papers include a briefing document naming senior military, scientific, and intelligence figures and a memorandum associated with presidential aide Robert Cutler. Researchers have identified questions involving typefaces, formatting, terminology, copied signatures, and provenance. The FBI marked an MJ-12 document “bogus,” while supporters argue that some details remain difficult to dismiss. The disagreement concerns document authentication before it concerns the extraordinary narrative.
MJ-12 became foundational to crash retrieval program lore because it supplied a named structure linking Roswell, presidents, scientists, and secrecy. Later alleged documents expanded the mythology, often without a verifiable custody history. A real historical figure’s name or an accurate period detail can make a fabrication persuasive without proving the organization described.
Majestic-12 is institutionally important as an alleged body and a case study in contested records, not as a confirmed federal organization. Its legacy shaped films, books, witness interpretation, and later claims about legacy programs. New MJ-12 material warrants examination of its original medium, provenance, archival context, and forensic characteristics rather than reliance on consistency with the story the documents created. The alleged committee should also be kept distinct from later, independently sourced claims about legacy UAP programs. Similar names or narratives do not create a shared provenance. The MJ-12 papers remain influential historical artifacts because of what people believed and did after their appearance, regardless of whether the organization they describe ever existed.

I found this document that I have never seen before - it is a letter from Richard M. Bissel to Lee M. Graham who did send Bissel MJ12 documents. Bissel read them "with very great interest" and think they not only "look" authentic, but has little doubt that they are. You can find it at the National Archives: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/493468585 I could not find the correspondence and the files Graham did send to Bissell.
