John Olsen Lear was an American aviator, airline captain, and UFO commentator. The son of aviation inventor and Learjet founder Bill Lear, he grew up around experimental aircraft and began flying as a teenager. Over a long professional career he accumulated thousands of hours in a wide range of aircraft, set numerous speed records, flew for airlines and cargo operators, and undertook contract aviation work that he said included missions connected to the CIA.
Lear’s aviation credentials were substantial and publicly verifiable, which helped distinguish him when he entered the UFO field in the mid-1980s. He became interested after hearing military accounts associated with the Rendlesham Forest incident and soon developed relationships with researchers including George Knapp and later Bob Lazar. Lear’s Las Vegas home and radio appearances became important gathering points for a new generation of Area 51 stories.
His 1987 “Lear statement” alleged that the U.S. government had recovered alien craft, entered agreements with extraterrestrials, and concealed abductions and underground bases. He continued expanding those claims to include structures on the Moon, manipulated space imagery, and a vast UAP cover-up. The assertions were not supported by public documentary or physical evidence, and even sympathetic researchers often considered parts of his account extreme.
Lear died in 2022, leaving two sharply different legacies. In aviation he was a highly skilled pilot from one of the industry’s defining families; in UAP culture he was a catalytic storyteller whose certainty often exceeded his evidence. His importance is historical rather than confirmatory: he helped connect Area 51, crash retrieval, and government-treaty narratives into the form that circulated widely through talk radio and the early internet.
