NewsNation Live is the daytime live-news program of NewsNation, the national cable news network owned by Nexstar Media Group. It premiered on September 19, 2022 as a weekday mid-morning show anchored by Marni Hughes, and by 2026 the name covered several weekday blocks, with Hughes in the morning, Nichole Berlie at midday, and Connell McShane in the afternoon, plus weekend editions. NewsNation describes it as a fast-paced look at the news from the border to Main Street to the White House.
The program grew with its network. NewsNation began in September 2020 as a three-hour primetime newscast on WGN America, and Nexstar relaunched the whole channel under the NewsNation name in March 2021, based at WGN's studios in Chicago. As the network expanded to 24 hours on weekdays in April 2023 and to round-the-clock news in June 2024, NewsNation Live gained hours and weekend editions. NewsNation reported its best ratings to date in 2025 and named McShane's afternoon block its fastest-growing program.
NewsNation Live is a general news show. Its segments cover crime and courts, national politics, foreign conflicts, aviation incidents, and breaking news, and its 2026 coverage ranged from the conflict with Iran to campus controversies and criminal trials. It has not been a regular venue for UAP stories.
That distinguishes it from the rest of its network, which is the most prominent American cable outlet for the subject. NewsNation's June 2023 broadcast of Ross Coulthart's interview with former intelligence officer David Grusch produced the network's highest-rated primetime week, and lawmakers cited it at the House UAP hearing that July. Coulthart later joined as a special correspondent, and his weekly Reality Check program, network specials, and primetime shows hosted by Chris Cuomo, Elizabeth Vargas, Katie Pavlich, and Leland Vittert carry most of NewsNation's UAP coverage.
NewsNation Live's significance in the UAP record is therefore contextual. It is the daytime anchor of the network that did most to bring disclosure claims to television, but its own coverage has centered on mainstream breaking news rather than on the phenomenon itself.
