Coulthart’s pre-UAP career included investigative television, current-affairs programs, books, and reporting on war crimes, intelligence, politics, and institutional misconduct. He worked inside large Australian newsrooms where major allegations required legal review and broadcast production, experience that later distinguished him from personality-first UFO media. As the subject became a central beat, he also embraced a more openly interpretive role, telling audiences what he believes confidential sources collectively imply while continuing to conduct long-form interviews.
His 2021 book In Plain Sight synthesized witnesses, official records, and source claims about government knowledge.
