William Joseph Donovan (1883–1959), known as "Wild Bill," was an American soldier, lawyer and intelligence chief who led the Office of Strategic Services, the wartime forerunner of the CIA. He had no documented role in any UFO matter, but 2026 theories about a private postwar network controlling UFO secrets put him among its founders.
Donovan was born in Buffalo, New York, on January 1, 1883, and graduated from Columbia, where he also studied law. In France in World War I he led a battalion of the 165th Infantry, the old "Fighting 69th," and later the regiment itself; he was wounded and earned the Medal of Honor for action at Landres-et-Saint-Georges in October 1918, and his soldiers gave him his nickname. He served as an assistant attorney general under Calvin Coolidge, ran unsuccessfully as the Republican candidate for governor of New York in 1932 and founded the New York law firm later known as Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine.
In July 1941 Franklin Roosevelt made him Coordinator of Information, and in June 1942 that office became the Office of Strategic Services, which Donovan directed until Truman abolished it in 1945. The OSS ran espionage, sabotage and research worldwide, and Donovan had brought in Allen Dulles, later CIA director, in 1941. The CIA calls Donovan the "father of American intelligence" and notes that a third of its early personnel were OSS veterans. A major general by 1944, he was the first person to receive the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal and the National Security Medal. He served as ambassador to Thailand in 1953 and 1954, passed away in Washington in 1959 and is buried at Arlington.
After the war Donovan was tied to the World Commerce Corporation, a trading company organized by veterans of British and American intelligence around Sir William Stephenson. A 1947 FBI report identifies Donovan as a member of its board, a review of the OSS veteran Betty Lussier's memoir lists him as a director, and a State Department memorandum of April 1952 shows his law firm acting as the company's counsel in a proposed sale of a Czechoslovak steel mill.
In 2026 the company became the center of a UFO theory. Promoting the researcher Jason Samosa's work in July, the American Alchemy host Jesse Michels described the firm as a secret society, with Donovan, Dulles and Stephenson on its board, that controls the UFO cover-up. Researchers Craig Oliver and Michael Armentor wrote that it was founded in 1945 by Dulles, Donovan and the Nazi commando Otto Skorzeny, and they tied Donovan, with Vannevar Bush and James Forrestal, to the alleged 1933 Magenta crash retrieval in Italy and what they call the birth of a UFO control group. A pseudonymous October 2026 source review found Donovan's documented roles to be board member, director and his firm's counsel, and no checked record showing the company received or held recovered craft. His career, which joined secret intelligence work to private law and business, made him a ready figure for theories of privately held UFO secrets.

It's the 81st anniversary today of the atomic bombs being dropped on Japan that ended WWII. I lived on a military base in Japan 45 minutes away from Hiroshima during my formative teenage years in the 1990s.
