George Adamski (1891–1965) was the best-known of the 1950s contactees, people who said they had met friendly, human-looking visitors from other planets. He said that on November 20, 1952, near Desert Center, California, he spoke with a man from Venus he later called Orthon. His books and his photographs of a "scout ship" gave the contactee movement its most recognizable images, and the long-haired visitor he described became the model for what UFO literature now calls the Nordic alien.

Adamski was born on April 17, 1891, in Bromberg, then in the German Empire and now Bydgoszcz, Poland, to Polish parents who took him to the United States when he was two. He served with the 13th Cavalry on the Mexican border from 1913 to 1916, then worked manual jobs before turning to Theosophy-influenced teaching. In the early 1930s he founded the Royal Order of Tibet in Laguna Beach, and in 1944, with funding from Alice K. Wells, he opened the Palomar Gardens campground and cafe at the foot of Palomar Mountain. Followers called him "Professor," though he had little formal schooling, and visitors often assumed he was connected with the Palomar Observatory above it.

By Adamski's account, he and six companions drove into the desert, he walked off alone, a small craft landed, and its pilot told him through gestures and telepathy that Venusians were worried about radiation from atomic bombs. He said the visitor returned a photographic plate on December 13, 1952, the day he photographed the scout ship through his six-inch telescope. Flying Saucers Have Landed (1953), written with the British author Desmond Leslie, and Inside the Space Ships (1955), which described trips aboard the visitors' craft, had sold a combined 200,000 copies by 1960. In May 1959 Queen Juliana of the Netherlands received him despite her officials' objections.

The record against him built quickly. Edward J. Ruppelt, chief of Project Blue Book, wrote that Air Force photo analysts at Wright-Patterson found Adamski's pictures "could have been easily faked by a ten year old with a Brownie camera." The researcher James W. Moseley found in 1955 that the witnesses contradicted Adamski's version of the desert meeting, and skeptics likened the scout ship to the top of a chicken brooder; in 2012 Joel Carpenter matched its body to the reflector of a 1930s gas lantern. In 1953 Adamski signed a statement acknowledging that the FBI did not endorse his claims, and agents later warned him to stop implying that it did. A 1957 letter supposedly from the State Department, which he displayed as an endorsement, was revealed by Moseley in 1985 to be a prank that he and Gray Barker had forged.

Adamski passed away in 1965 in Silver Spring, Maryland, shortly after a lecture in Washington, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Planetary science has since shown the surface of Venus to be hostile to life, and spacecraft and astronauts contradicted his descriptions of the Moon's far side. In 2026 online essays and documentaries returned to him as the origin of the Nordic alien, and some traced today's language of disclosure to Orthon's promise that the truth about the visitors would be revealed when the time was right. His benevolent space brothers, bearing warnings about the atomic age, remain the founding template of contactee lore.
