Mark McCandlish was an American conceptual artist and aviation illustrator who became one of the best-known sources for claims that the United States built antigravity craft modeled on alien technology. Born in 1955 into an Air Force family, he spent decades producing illustrations for defense and aerospace clients; in his Disclosure Project testimony he listed General Dynamics, Lockheed, Northrop, McDonnell Douglas, Boeing and Rockwell among the contractors he had worked for, and he said he also took illustration assignments from Popular Science. He said his interest began in 1967 at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts, where he watched a silent light hover over the base's nuclear weapons storage area through a telescope before it sped away.
The claim that defined his public life was secondhand. In testimony recorded in December 2000 for Steven Greer's Disclosure Project, McCandlish said a former schoolmate, Brad Sorensen, told him of attending an air show at Norton Air Force Base in California on November 12, 1988, with a former senior defense official, whom McCandlish speculated was Frank Carlucci. Inside a large hangar, Sorensen said, they were shown three hovering saucer-shaped craft behind a curtain. McCandlish said the craft were called Alien Reproduction Vehicles, nicknamed the Flux Liner, and he turned Sorensen's description of a crew compartment, oxygen tanks and stacked high-voltage capacitor plates into a detailed cutaway drawing tied to the Biefeld–Brown electrogravitic effect.
McCandlish kept presenting the drawing in lectures and interviews until shortly before his passing, and his account shifted over time: according to a 2026 AltSci summary of his final talk at the Alt Propulsion Conference, the viewing moved in later retellings from Norton to Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, and he acknowledged he could not establish that "ARV" literally meant reproduced alien technology. No government record has confirmed the craft, and physicist Eric Davis said on That UFO Podcast in 2026 that he considered the story a fabrication.
McCandlish passed away in Redding, California, in April 2021. In 2026, after a friend of the Huntsville researcher Amy Eskridge released emails that mentioned him, online commentators grouped the two deaths and called for a congressional inquiry. Associates said he had contacted Senator Marco Rubio's office about testifying to the Senate Intelligence Committee weeks before he passed away; that account has not been publicly documented.
McCandlish's cutaway became a widely circulated image in the disclosure movement and remains the main visual reference for claims of a human-built, saucer-shaped antigravity vehicle. Online researchers in 2026 still treated his account as a starting point for an "ARV hypothesis" holding that the United States moved from recovering craft to building its own, while critics such as Davis regard it as a story with no documentary support.
