1952 Flying Saucer Talk
The 1952 Flying Saucer Talk is Edward Ruppelt's March 1952 Air Force UFO briefing in Boston, kept on tape for 74 years and released in 2026 at Congress's request.
On March 26, 1952, Air Force intelligence officers from the Air Technical Intelligence Center briefed the Beacon Hill Group in Boston on the service's reorganized investigation of unidentified flying objects. The principal speaker was Edward J. Ruppelt, who had taken over Project Grudge months earlier and was turning it into Project Blue Book. Beacon Hill was an Air Force study of reconnaissance technology whose members were attached to MIT's Project Lincoln, and a reel-to-reel recording of the session, labeled "AF-ATIC-FILM, 03/52" and tagged as a "flying saucer talk," remained in the custody of MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
For decades the briefing was known only from a March 1952 Blue Book status report and from Ruppelt's 1956 book, which describes spending a full day with the group. In May 2026, Rep. Eric Burlison wrote to MIT Lincoln Laboratory asking it to preserve and digitize the tape and transfer it to the National Archives' UAP records collection. His letter described an audio recording and raised the possibility that a classification guide still applied to it. Burlison said in June that the laboratory had agreed to hand the tape over, and in mid-September that the National Archives had digitized and declassified it.
The Department of War released the material on September 18, 2026, in the sixth tranche of its PURSUE records program, as a 19-page transcript catalogued as DOW-UAP-D154 and about 65 minutes of audio. On the tape, Ruppelt describes roughly 800 cases on file, of which about 2 percent were hoaxes and about 20 percent were very good reports from reliable observers that still allowed no conclusions. He lists places where reports clustered, including ports, Los Alamos and Albuquerque, White Sands and Holloman, Camp Hood, and Oak Ridge. He recounts range crews tracking objects near missile launches, discusses the green fireballs reported over New Mexico, and outlines plans for diffraction-grating cameras and radar-scope photography. Another officer sums up near the end, and the audience asks questions; one speaker addresses Ruppelt as lieutenant, though the release titles him captain.
Reaction split along familiar lines. The Sol Foundation called the recording likely the most significant record in the release, and advocates highlighted Ruppelt's descriptions of silent, highly maneuverable objects and of clusters near sensitive facilities. Researcher Joe Murgia, who welcomed the audio, had warned beforehand not to expect a smoking gun. Some social posts and early headlines described the tape as a classified video or as a record of the July 1952 Washington, D.C. sightings, but it is an audio recording made four months before those events. The Department of War's summary also grouped the clusters around nuclear sites, while the transcript's own list is broader.
The talk's value is as a contemporaneous record of how the Air Force's UFO investigators framed the problem at the start of Blue Book, a year before the CIA-convened Robertson Panel pushed official policy toward public debunking. It shows officers privately treating a minority of reports from trained observers as unexplained while declining to speculate about their origin. It is also one of the first PURSUE records released because a member of Congress identified a specific item and asked for it by name.
We have evidence that David Grusch got access to classified UFO files because he pushed government to release 1952 Blue Book Edward Ruppelt talk. He saw this and other classified documents many years ago. If people pay attention, Grusch instructed Burlison to request specific files which are easy to get but somehow they were never publicly disclosed. This particular file, Ruppelt talk, was declassified in 6th tranche of UFO files. Both Grusch and Burlison discussed it publicly before releasin...

We’ve read about Ruppelt’s 1952 briefing for years. This is the first time you can actually hear it. I cut the best 2 minutes. https://t.co/XB8QlyAxvC [Quoted] Ed Ruppelt. 1952. On the #UFO reality. Here are your highlights from this remarkable talk in 2.5 minutes. Silent objects. Extreme maneuverability. 90 degree turns. Pilot encounters. Some of it sounds remarkably familiar. https://t.co/7gpW4u0diK

🛸❓New UFO Footage from 1952? ❓🛸 (Yesterday, Dump #6 brought us film of alleged UFOs shot in 1952. That footage was first released in 1956. The clip starts with a stabilized version from 2021 and an interview with the guy who shot it.) "The film falls far short of showing what I saw with the naked eye. Like two saucers, one inverted over the other. It appeared to me to be about the size of B-29s at 10,000 feet. They had a metallic appearance. They seemed to be made of some kind of polished m...
[Retweeted] I sent a letter to MIT Lincoln Laboratory in May requesting the “Flying Saucer Talk” recording. Today, that tape was released through the Department of War’s PURSUE program. This is exactly why we’ve kept pushing to find and release these historical records. More than 70 years ago, the Air Force was investigating UAPs near some of our nation’s most sensitive facilities, with radar returns indicating extraordinary speeds. We asked for the tape. Now the American people can hear it f...
