Apollo 16

Apollo 16 was the fifth crewed Moon landing of NASA's Apollo program. Commander John Young, lunar module pilot Charlie Duke and command module pilot Ken Mattingly launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 16, 1972. A fault in the backup steering system of the command and service module's main engine delayed the landing by about six hours and led NASA to shorten the mission by a day, but Young and Duke set down in the Descartes Highlands on April 20, Houston time. On three moonwalks totaling more than 20 hours they drove the lunar rover about 27 kilometers and collected rocks showing that the region was not volcanic, overturning the pre-mission hypothesis. Duke, at 36 the youngest person to walk on the Moon, left a family portrait on the surface. The crew splashed down in the Pacific on April 27.

The mission's place in UFO lore rests mostly on a few seconds of film. Footage shot from the spacecraft as it was leaving the Moon was promoted for decades as a flying saucer trailing plasma, until NASA's Image Science and Analysis Group at Johnson Space Center matched the shape to a small floodlight on a boom projecting from the spacecraft, according to Skeptoid's account of the analysis. Apollo 16 also carried an experiment, known as ALFMED, built to study the light flashes Apollo astronauts reported seeing when their cabin was dark, which were thought to come from cosmic-ray particles passing through the eye. Crew debriefings from Apollo 14 and Apollo 17 about the same flashes were among the NASA files released by the government in 2026.

Apollo 16 itself entered those files on June 12, 2026, when PURSUE Release 03 included two NASA audio recordings titled "Apollo 16 Scientific Debriefing." Recorded in Houston in 1972, they capture principal investigators presenting preliminary results from Apollo 16 experiments to astronauts preparing for Apollo 17. According to the government's file notes, the speakers also describe anomalies, including a "flash" that had been observed but not yet reported, and at one point a speaker makes "an off-handed comment," saying "Could be an alien starbase or something, I don't know," while discussing correlations between experimental data sets.

The quip, not the science, made the headlines. The Daily Mail presented the recording as audio from a "secret NASA meeting" that revealed a discussion of a possible alien base on the Moon, and the line was clipped into supercuts of the release. The Vetted podcast answered that it was a three-second joke in an hour-long meeting, one that drew laughter, and that it was being presented as a data point. The government's own description had already called the remark off-handed, and neither file note describes a sighting of a craft.

Duke has remained the mission's most public voice. A committed born-again Christian since 1978, he told CBN News in October 2026, when he was 91, that he regards UFOs as real but demonic, citing the biblical warning that the devil can appear as an angel of light. In the documented record, Apollo 16's contribution to UAP history is small: a floodlight once mistaken for a saucer, its share of the era's light-flash research, and a recorded aside about an alien starbase that its own release labeled a passing comment.
