Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project was the wartime program that built the first atomic bombs. Directed by Army general Leslie Groves, with J. Robert Oppenheimer leading the bomb-design laboratory at Los Alamos, it grew out of research organized under Vannevar Bush's Office of Scientific Research and Development and spread across secret sites at Los Alamos in New Mexico, Oak Ridge in Tennessee and Hanford in Washington. At its peak it employed nearly 130,000 people, and it cost nearly $2 billion. The Atomic Energy Commission took over the nation's atomic weapons work in January 1947, and the project was formally disbanded that August. Its place in UAP history comes less from the bomb than from what followed: the facilities it left behind and the model of secrecy it set.

The first link is geographic. From late 1948, pilots, military personnel and scientists in New Mexico reported bright green fireballs crossing the sky near the region's atomic and military installations. University of New Mexico astronomer Lincoln LaPaz, who saw one himself, said it "was not a conventional meteorite fall." In January 1949 the director of Army intelligence at Fourth Army headquarters wrote that the sightings were "of such great importance, especially as they are occurring in the vicinity of sensitive installations," that a scientific board should study them. A conference at Los Alamos on February 16, 1949, attended by laboratory director Norris Bradbury, the physicist Edward Teller, LaPaz and military intelligence officers, could not identify their origin; Project Sign had meant to send a representative, and the UCLA physicist Joseph Kaplan appeared only in LaPaz's account of his views. Project Twinkle, set up in December 1949 to photograph the objects, was never fully carried out, and officials concluded the fireballs were probably natural.

The second link is institutional. Many later secrecy arguments rest on the system the project left behind: the Atomic Energy Commission, its national laboratories and contractors, and the classification rules later written into the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, whose "Restricted Data" category can make nuclear information classified from the moment it is created. The Act's text does not mention UAP or non-human technology, but it recurs in claims that a crash-retrieval program could be hidden inside nuclear-weapons structures. In "The Manhattan Project 2.0," a video series begun in May 2026, the researcher UAP Gerb argued that a recovery effort founded in 1947 borrowed the project's compartmentalization, physical security and classification controls, placed recovered craft with Atomic Energy Commission laboratories, and later splintered into separate special access programs. In November 2024, Liberation Times reported an anonymous source's claim that study of the alleged 1933 Magenta craft "became closely integrated with Manhattan Project activities," with the commission working alongside Italian and German scientists at Wright Field from 1946. The report carried no official response, and no released record supports the claim.

The project's name also serves as an analogy in the disclosure debate, usually in one of two directions. Some use it to describe how a program might have been hidden. In June 2026, Representative Eric Burlison, who has pursued UAP records on the House Oversight Committee, wrote: "Secrets were buried in quasi private labs created right after the Manhattan Project so nothing would leak." He said he was sending interrogatories and subpoena requests to each of them. Others use it as a prescription. In a clip circulated in March 2026, Eric Weinstein argued that if a reverse-engineering program exists, it should be organized as a Manhattan Project–style effort drawing in the world's leading physicists.

What ties these strands together is a documented history of secrecy rather than documented contact. The record shows scientists and military officers at the project's former sites trying to explain unidentified lights in their skies, and it shows a vast scientific enterprise kept largely hidden in wartime even as Soviet spies penetrated it. It does not show the project or its successor agency handling recovered craft. Those claims rest on anonymous sources, interpretive reconstructions and later testimony, and the analogy endures because the Manhattan Project remains the clearest precedent for a secret state science effort on that scale.
